Ocean Reef Snatches Series Lead from Hillarys Yacht Club

Ocean Reef Sea Sport Club has turned the tables on their southern rivals taking a decisive 39 point lead after the third round of the North Coast Mini-Series yachting regatta.

Consistent performances by Ocean Reef’s smaller division 1 and 2 sports yacht fleet sent the Hillarys fleet home empty handed after the fifth and six races in the 10 race series recently held off Mullaloo beach. Led by Division 1 yachts Leda, Safarri and Missing Link, the Ocean Reef contingent consistently though narrowly, outran all but Hillarys’ star performer on the day, Covert Operation, which bagged consecutive wins on corrected time. Held in light to moderate south westerly winds the final results for the top three yachts in both Division 1 races was decided by less than one and a half minutes after 60 minutes of intense competition. A similar story was played out in the 14-boat Division 2 fleet with ORSCC yachts Solitaire, Offshore, Pegasus and Petite Bateau extinguishing any hope of Hillarys squaring the day’s result.

Holly Molly (HYC) in its maiden season put up a consistent yet forlorn solo effort which saw the first nine boats separated by less than a minute on corrected time in the day’s first race. Although Hillarys’ Division 2 fleet generally outperformed their rivals with high end placings in the across-the-line placings, they were unable to manufacture enough pace to outdo the handicapper’s expectations.Sensing a possible boil-over, the ORSSC fleet led by Offshore, Pegasus and Petite Bateau wound on the winches and produced an encore second race, this time taking three of the top four finishing spots on corrected time. It is only the second time that ORSCC has topped the points ladder in the three years since the regatta began.  The early warning for Hillarys came after races three and four in December when Ocean Reef erased a 16 point deficit and moved to a paper-thin 8 point lead.

Having established a tentative winning margin – last year’s series was decided in the final two races of the series – the pressure will now be on Ocean Reef to go one better in the penultimate race 5 series on February 12. Although crestfallen after the latest round, the Hillarys division 1 fleet is expected to be bolstered by the return of seasoned campaigners First Impression, Apatiche and leading WA offshore racer Bad Habits.
